Occupation and Outlook Trend Information
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of software developers is projected to grow 22 percent from 2012 to 2022, much faster than the average for all occupations. The main reason for the rapid growth is a large increase in the demand for computer software.
The top four industries in which developers worked in May 2012 were: computer and electronic product manufacturing, software publishers, finance and insurance, and computer systems design and related services.

Salary Q&A
According to US News and World Reports, the Labor Department reported that software developers made a median salary of $92,660 in 2013. The highest-paid 10 percent in the profession earned $143,540 in 2013, while the lowest-paid earned $55,770. Highest-paid positions can be found within San Jose, California; Sioux City, Iowa; and Panama City, Florida.
